Frieze Abu Dhabi: what a borrowed name buys, and what it can’t

“What’s in a name? That which we call a rose / By any other word would smell as sweet.” - William Shakespeare, Romeo and Juliet

Frieze Abu Dhabi opens at Manarat Al Saadiyat on 19 November. It is the first Frieze fair in the region. It is also the second time Abu Dhabi’s art fair has borrowed someone else’s name.

That second part is the interesting one.

Abu Dhabi has rented a name before

In 2007 and 2008 the city hosted a fair called Art Paris Abu Dhabi, run with the Art Paris fair in France. In 2009 it dropped the borrowed name and launched its own. Abu Dhabi Art opened at Emirates Palace that November with 42 galleries. From 2011 it moved to Manarat Al Saadiyat, and it stayed there.

It grew every way a fair can grow. The 17th edition, last November, had more than 140 galleries from 37 countries.

Then, in October 2025, the Department of Culture and Tourism announced that Abu Dhabi Art would become Frieze Abu Dhabi. Same building. Same month. Seventeen years of its own name, handed back.

What is different about Frieze Abu Dhabi

The new fair is smaller. Frieze says more than 80 galleries this year, against the 140 or so of the last Abu Dhabi Art.

That isn’t a failure. It is the point. Frieze is a curated brand. A smaller list under a name collectors already trust is worth more than a long list under a name they have to look up.

The programme has more shape, too. Frieze Masters Abu Dhabi, curated by Marika Sardar, takes the Indian Ocean as its theme, from antiquity to the early 20th century. Global Futures is led by Tarini Malik. There is a first Frieze Abu Dhabi Artist Award, Frieze Sculpture, and a new annual exhibition called In Dialogue that pairs an established UAE artist with an emerging one.

And the fair joins a calendar that already includes London, New York, Los Angeles, Chicago and Seoul. That calendar is the asset. A collector who flies to Frieze London now has a reason to put Saadiyat in the diary.

The rebrand meeting I keep sitting in

I have been in a lot of naming and rebrand workshops in this region. The pattern is familiar.

Someone puts up the new logo first. The room reacts to the logo. An hour goes on the typeface. Nobody asks what the old name had earned, who earned it, or what would leave the building with it.

That last question is the one that matters. A name is a container. What sits inside it is people, habits and relationships. Change the label carelessly and you pour some of that out.

What the Frieze Abu Dhabi deal kept

Here is what I think Abu Dhabi got right. It changed the name and kept the room.

Dyala Nusseibeh, who directed Abu Dhabi Art, is the director of Frieze Abu Dhabi. The venue is the same. The dates sit where collectors already expect them. Eva Langret, Frieze’s director for Europe, the Middle East and Africa, said the first edition “inherits nearly two decades of active community-building”. That is an unusually honest line for a launch. It credits the old brand instead of erasing it.

The deal also came with a new owner behind the name. Ari Emanuel agreed to buy Frieze from Endeavor in May 2025, and the Abu Dhabi fair was described as the first major initiative under that new ownership. So the emirate isn’t just licensing a logo. It is buying a seat inside a global events business that wants this to work.

The turn

I started this piece ready to argue that Abu Dhabi had traded away an identity it spent seventeen years building. That the city had gone back to renting.

I don’t think that any more. Shakespeare had half of it right. The rose does smell the same under another name. But nobody can smell it from London. That is what a name does. It travels further than the thing itself, and gets people on a plane to find out.

What a borrowed name can’t do is make anyone stay. That part is still local. The galleries from Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Riyadh, Beirut and Cairo. The UAE artists in In Dialogue. The people who kept turning up when the fair was smaller and nobody outside the region was watching.

What brands licensing a global name should take from it

Most of the region’s brand decisions now involve a borrowed name somewhere. A hotel flag. A branded residence. A licensed theme park. A retail franchise.

Before you sign, write down what you are keeping. The people, the place, the date, the habits your customers already have. If the list is short, the new name is doing all the work, and it will leave when the contract does.

Then decide what only you can add. Frieze can bring the collectors. It can’t bring an Indian Ocean show that makes sense in Abu Dhabi and nowhere else.

Rent the name if it gets people through the door. Keep the room.

Frieze Abu Dhabi, in brief

When is Frieze Abu Dhabi 2026?

Frieze Abu Dhabi runs from 19 to 22 November 2026. It is the first edition of the fair and the first Frieze fair in the Middle East.

Where is Frieze Abu Dhabi held?

At Manarat Al Saadiyat in the Saadiyat Cultural District, Abu Dhabi. It is organised by Frieze in partnership with the Department of Culture and Tourism - Abu Dhabi.

Is Frieze Abu Dhabi the same as Abu Dhabi Art?

It replaces it. Abu Dhabi Art ran for 17 editions from 2009 to 2025, most of them at Manarat Al Saadiyat. It continues from 2026 as Frieze Abu Dhabi, with the same director, Dyala Nusseibeh.

How many galleries are at Frieze Abu Dhabi?

More than 80 galleries from over 60 cities and more than 35 countries, according to Frieze. The final Abu Dhabi Art in 2025 had more than 140.

What else is on at Frieze Abu Dhabi?

Frieze Masters Abu Dhabi, curated by Marika Sardar on the theme of the Indian Ocean; Global Futures, led by Tarini Malik; the first Frieze Abu Dhabi Artist Award; Frieze Sculpture; and In Dialogue, pairing an established and an emerging UAE artist.

What can brands learn from the Frieze Abu Dhabi rebrand?

That a borrowed name buys reach, not loyalty. Before licensing a global brand, list what you are keeping - people, place, timing, habits - and what only you can add. Abu Dhabi changed the name and kept the director, the venue and the dates.
